Polished axe

Polished axe

Only the blade of this axe has survived! What did the handle look like? How was the blade attached to the handle?

Having compared this blade with similar finds, archaeologists believe that the axe looked like this originally.

Axe

It took a lot of time and work to make the blade. First of all, prehistoric people had to shape the blade with an even harder stone. Then they rubbed the surface smooth with a grindstone.

If you look closely at the blade you’ll see that it hasn’t been smoothed evenly all over. The part that was attached to the handle is rougher, but the visible part has a very smooth surface.
