Siebeneich gravestone

Grabstein

The Raetian alphabet was one of the first alphabets used in the Alpine region.

The Raetian script (writing) is different from the Latin script that is used in Europe and many other countries of the world today. Only part of it has been deciphered so far.

The Raetians carved their script on objects made of ceramic, iron, horn, bone and stone.

Krug

It’s believed that they carved inscriptions mainly on cultural objects, for example gifts to the gods and gravestones.

  • Polished axe
  • Retoucheur
  • Ötzi’s dagger
  • The female menhir of Algund
  • Horse figures with bit for attaching reins
  • Siebeneich gravestone
  • Head of Venus
  • Dice
  • Detail of an Avaric belt

You can see what the script of the Raetian alphabet looked like from this gravestone made of a stone called porphyry. Do you know a type of writing different from the one you usually use? Who uses it and when?
