Cold cell

Kühlzelle

The glacier ice preserved Ötzi for over 5000 years. To preserve his body it must be kept frozen. So a cold cell was especially developed for him which maintains a constant temperature of –6 °C.

Ötzi is a wet mummy. He was always surrounded by water in the form of ice. That’s why the humidity in the cold cell has to be kept at 98%. The mummy is periodically sprayed with water to prevent it from drying out.

There’s a backup cell next to the one Ötzi is in and a separate generator in case of power failure. Visitors are not allowed to enter the cell but can get a good view of Ötzi through a window.
