Roman Period

The Roman Period (15 BC – 400 AD)

In 15 BC the Romans conquered the Alpine region and absorbed the area into the Roman Empire. However, large swathes of the southern Alpine valleys had already fallen under Roman domination long before. The integration of the region in the Roman Empire altered the living conditions of the indigenous population. The Romans’ language, writing, laws, architecture, clothing, and eating habits spread into the new Roman provinces north of the Alps via the newly built trunk roads.
