Film locations
A number of places can serve as locations for documentaries on the Iceman:
The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano with the original glacier mummy and objects found with it.
The mummy is displayed in its archaeological context of the southern face of the Main Alpine Ridge. At the Museum you can also see the most prominent Neolithic finds from the region of what is today South Tyrol (menhirs, axes, daggers, etc.).
The site on the Tisenjoch/Similaun glacier at 3210 metres altitude.
The site can be reached on foot via the Tisen Valley from Vernagt in the Schnals Valley or via the Finail summit by the cable car from Karthaus. It is situated 93 metres into Italian/South Tyrolean territory. The nearest Alpine lodge, the Similaunhuette is roughly an hour’s hike from the site. The lodge serves food and drink from June to October and from February to May. The site itself is only free of ice and snow in the summer months of July, August and early September. The Passeier-Schnals mountain-guide association offers guided tours to the site (the route via the Finail summit should not be attempted without a rope team due to crevasses in the glacier). In winter the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology and the mountain-guide association jointly organize ski tours to the site.
In justified cases authorization is granted for helicopter landings. For information on flight organizers and permits contact Südtirol Marketing Gesellschaft SMG, tel. (+39) 0471-999888 or the Schnals Valley Tourist Office, tel. (+39) 0473-679148.
The Archeoparc, an “Ötzi“ theme park with a reconstructed Neolithic village of pile dwellings
Situated in the locality of Unser Frau, the park commands an excellent view of the pyramid that was erected at the site on the Tisenjoch. The Archeoparc provides an insight into living conditions in the Iceman’s times in the area he came from and runs workshops on aspects of life in Neolithic times, such as archery, bread baking, sewing, etc. The park also provides support for film makers www.archeoparc.it.
The “Ötzi-village" in Umhausen/Ötztal (Austria), another theme park on the Neolithic Age. It can be accessed on the Austrian side of the Alps from the A12 Autobahn in the Inn valley. www.oetzidorf.at.
