Other Laboratory Findings
A few days after the discovery, the organic materials found at the scene started showing signs of drying out. They were then immediately transferred to the Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseum in Mainz, Germany, for proper storage and restoration.
Once the objects had been carefully catalogued, samples were taken to determine the nature and age of the materials.
The restorers cleaned the finds with distilled water before taking any conservation measures. Leather and hide had to be moisturized.
In addition, the items were freeze-dried so as to gently remove any moisture. Wooden objects were placed in a bath and then dried slowly.
The restorers’ meticulous work paid off. They were able to join fragments of the clothing and reconstruct the individual items of clothing.
