The Stone Disc

The disc made of white Dolomite marble has a hole in the middle through which a hide strip was threaded. Nine twisted hide thongs were tied on to a loop in this strip, forming a sort of tassel.

The disc’s function remains unclear. Archaeologists originally believed it was a piece of decorative jewellery. However, it may also have had a practical purpose. The hide thongs may well have served as repair material. In damp conditions or with clammy hands it would have been difficult to untie them. The stone disc would make the task of untangling them easier.

The disc may also have served to attach the tassel to the belt by threading the stone disc under it – as on the Japanese kimono.
